Paint Removal to Reveal Original Stonework

Client: RM Watson

Location/Site: 29-31 George Street, The Rocks

Project: Paint removal to reveal the original stonework of the historic terraces at 29-31 George Street, The Rocks - also known as the Victorian Pair.

Scope of Works: As part of a rejuvenation of The Rocks area, Let's Clean was entrusted with removing all the remaining exterior paint at heritage-listed 29-31 George Street, The Rocks, taking care to leave the stonework in as close to its original state as possible. This was followed by salt extraction on parts of the stone façade in order to maintain less salt in the masonry. (Read about the desalination works here.)

The painted stonework prior to paint removal.

A testing panel of solvent and alkaline-based paint strippers.

Method: Our proprietary paint strippers, GreyGel (solvent-based) and Heritage No.1 (alkaline-based), were ideal for getting through the layers of paint. GreyGel for the upper layers of modern paint, and Heritage No.1 for the older, lead-based paint. Paint stripping residues were washed and captured by our BlueVac Captive Head Washing System, allowing for disposal of waste in accordance with environmental requirements. (The BlueVac System was also used for the desalination process.)

Outcome: Great care was taken to reveal the original stonework which is now vibrant, having been expertly paint stripped by our team using our proprietary coatings removers and cleaning equipment.
